What date is Giving Tuesday this year?
Giving Tuesday is on Nov. 28, 2023.
What is Giving Tuesday?
It’s a day where kindness knows no bounds and individuals enthusiastically give compassion, time and resources to fund charitable causes around the world. Giving Tuesday empowers individuals and communities to make a substantial difference in the world by shining a spotlight on nonprofits that need support, like Children's Health. Giving Tuesday is a global movement that occurs annually on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
The day serves as a counterbalance to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, redirecting the focus to acts of kindness and giving back. It also raises awareness and funding for causes that span all categories. The idea is to inspire people to spend less on holiday shopping and instead give a portion of their resources to the causes they care about.
Children’s Health is one of the many nonprofits that participates in Giving Tuesday to garner support for the patients it serves. Children’s Health needs continued support for major causes like pediatric mental and behavioral health, clinical research and enhancements to its campuses and facilities to continue to deliver the best possible care for the growing pediatric population in North Texas. The number of children in North Texas is expected to triple over the next three decades. All support for Children’s Health on Giving Tuesday will make life better for children now and into the future.
History of Giving Tuesday
So, what is Giving Tuesday all about? It all started on November 27, 2012 when a team of innovators at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City desired to create a movement that harnessed the power of social media and technology to promote charitable giving. They wanted to establish a giving day that reminded everyone of the true meaning of the holiday season, encouraging people to think beyond consumerism and contribute to meaningful causes that positively impact society.
The innovators called on nonprofits, businesses and influencers to spread the message and excite others to get involved in acts of giving. Hashtags like #GivingTuesday boosted the movement’s reach, causing it to go viral on multiple social media platforms.
Giving Tuesday matters because:
- It fosters generosity among individuals
- It creates positive change across various causes
- It promotes global impact, unity and compassion
- It empowers nonprofits to get noticed, attract new donors and engage with supporters interested in making a greater impact
- It builds community and cultivates a sense of togetherness around a shared purpose
