Scheri
‘You can have more of an impact than you probably realize’
When she was in school to become a nurse, Scheri Sims became captivated by what she saw during one of her clinical rotations in an operating room when a surgeon invited her to scrub in and hold some of the tools.
“I loved it. I knew that was the kind of thing I’d enjoy doing every day,” she said.
After graduating, she searched for a role that would allow her to be in the operating room, ideally at a pediatric hospital. After interviewing at a couple of places, she chose Children’s Health, where she’s now been for more than two decades.
“I identified with the vision and mission of making life better for children,” she said. “Children’s Health was the perfect fit.”
For several years, she cared for many young patients before, during and after surgeries as an operating room registered nurse at Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
In 2008, as the hospital system opened the doors of its new northern market campus at Children’s Medical Center Plano, Scheri readied for her transition into leadership. Starting out as the operating room team leader at the Plano hospital, she has since weaved through different opportunities.
Now the Director of Perioperative Services, Scheri oversees the operations of all the departments involved in pediatric surgery at Children’s Medical Center Plano.
“My time at Children’s Health has been amazing. I’ve enjoyed every moment,” Scheri said. “It’s been especially fun to watch the Plano campus grow, and I’m proud of the part I played in helping.”
Not only has Scheri been instrumental in helping ensure families north of Dallas receive incredible care, but she’s also supported Children’s Health through recurring gifts since her earliest days.
I knew from the start that I wanted to pitch in, even if it was a small part. That’s how much I believe in what we do.

Setting up an ongoing, recurring gift through a payroll deduction took her minutes, but she hopes her gifts’ impact will last a lifetime.
“It can start with something as simple as $5 donated directly through your paycheck every month,” she said. “Combine that with what all the other people are doing, and you can have more of an impact than you probably realize.”
As the hospital system gears up for its new Dallas pediatric campus and continues to invest in campus enhancements for its Plano campus, Scheri knows it’ll take everyone across the community to support Children’s Health — including its team members. Already, support from the community and generous team members fueled the opening of a new tower at the Plano campus that expanded surgical services and tripled the hospital’s bed capacity for the growing community north of Dallas.
For Scheri’s team, donations have helped purchase patient equipment and devices that allow them to perform new life-saving procedures that weren’t possible before at the hospital.
Scheri’s hope for the hospital system’s future? That Children's Health continues to grow alongside its surrounding communities.
“Every single day, we are already making life better for children,” she said. “No matter what your role is, whether it’s clinical or not, everything that we do benefits the patients we serve. Supporting the future of Children’s Health guarantees we’re there for families for generations to come.”
