In October 2015, Briana Ayala was diagnosed with cancer – a large tumor wrapped around her aorta and spine. Her treatment started with chemotherapy, but the tumor continued to grow. She was referred to Children's Health for life-saving resection of her tumor.
After sequencing Briana's unique tumor, Dr. Ted Laetsch determined that she may respond to an experimental drug and she was enrolled in the study. Briana and her family have driven more than 260 hours between El Paso and Children's Medical Center Dallas since her treatment began two years ago.
Today, Briana is in remission and a typical high school freshman.
