The gift establishes the S.T. “Buddy” and Hallie Harris Fund in Honor of Dr. Kern Wildenthal at the Foundation.
“The Buddy and Hallie Harris Fund will enable Children’s Medical Center to improve the lives of countless children and families through top-quality pediatric medical research,” said Christopher J. Durovich, president and CEO of Children’s Health System of Texas. “It is especially gratifying that this gift honors Kern Wildenthal, who for decades has advanced the collaboration and partnership between Children’s Medical Center and the clinical, educational and research efforts at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.”
The Harrises have been longtime supporters of medical research in institutions led by Dr. Wildenthal, who, in addition to serving as president of Children’s Medical Center Foundation, is president emeritus of UT Southwestern, where he was president from 1986 to 2008. The Harrises made numerous major gifts to UT Southwestern prior to Mr. Harris’ death in 2007, including a contribution to the Kern Wildenthal Fund for Medical Excellence at Southwestern Medical Foundation honoring his years of service.
Mr. Harris was a retired lieutenant commander in the Navy and a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He joined Texas Instruments in 1949 and was a member of TI’s board until his retirement. He also served as president of Texas Instruments Foundation. Mrs. Harris was a TI employee for 32 years.
“This generous gift is deeply appreciated and meaningful,” Dr. Wildenthal said. “For decades, my wife, Marnie, and I have counted Buddy and Hallie among our dearest friends, and Hallie’s desire to further support medicine through a donation in my name to Children’s is truly humbling.”
