Inaugural KIDstruction Week Brings In $57,000 From Industry Participants

Members of the architectural, engineering and construction industries recently contributed nearly $57,000 to Children’s Medical Center Foundation during North Texas’ first KIDstruction Week.

The funds will support essential Family Support Services such as social work, pastoral care and Child Life, which includes clown, art, music and pet therapies.

Modeled after a highly successful program at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the inaugural KIDstruction Week campaign was built on a foundation of some of the leading companies of North Texas’ booming construction industry.  More than a dozen companies participated, and 129 of their respective employees donated a portion of their paychecks to Children’s during the month of March, depending on their companies’ pay schedules. Several companies, such as McCarthy Building Co. and Schwob Building Co., matched their employees’ gifts, while others contributed direct donations and sponsorships, like Skanska USA, the Cornerstone sponsor.

“Our inaugural KIDstruction Week campaign’s success was fueled by the support of a highly engaged steering committee representing some of the most respected construction, design and architectural firms in North Texas,” said Dr. Kern Wildenthal, president of Children’s Medical Center Foundation.  “The active participation and support of the companies’ executives and employees – in KIDstruction Week and through many other events – continues to help us expand our philanthropic footprint in the region.”

Among key advocates behind the concept was Meloni McDaniel, CEO of TEXO, the largest commercial contractors association in Texas. The committee was initially composed of a few companies already involved with Children’s, but quickly grew, thanks to TEXO’s promotional and leadership support. 

The steering committee was not only built of people who care about children, but also with people who had a personal, unforgettable connection to the hospital. Several committee members have children whose lives were saved at Children’s. Two of those patients are now adults and one, now 5, was released from the hospital shortly before the KIDstruction Week campaign began.

“I never thought my own daughter would be a patient at Children’s, but after what we have been through, I understand, like I never could have before, the value of this hospital and its place in the community,” said Whitney Teague, a marketing manager for the Dallas-based Spring Valley Construction Co.. Her daughter was released from Children’s in January after being treated for leukemia.

The steering committee and other participating companies also participated in the Red Balloon Run & Ride, produced by Passion for Children’s each April to benefit Children’s. KIDstruction Week leaders hosted a KIDstruction Zone for children and families, which included coloring, Lego building stations, photo opportunities and other construction-themed activities.

Participating companies included Skanska USA, McCarthy Building Co., Schwob Building Co., HDR, WHR Architects, Spring Valley Construction Co., TDIndustries, Datum Engineers, Walter P Moore, TEXO, Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing, Alpha-Barnes Real Estate Services, PRDG and HKS.

Meetings for next year’s KIDstruction Week campaign will begin in August with the goal of doubling the number of company and individuals participating. For more information, go to give.childrens.com/kidstruction.
