Army of supporters raises funds for pediatric cancer

  Micaelas Army
Thank you to Sharon White, her son Jack, and Micaela’s Army Foundation for presenting Children’s Medical Center Foundation with a $60,000 check to accelerate research into pediatric cancer.

Board member Sean Lowe, from “The Bachelor,” and Dancers Give Back Dallas faculty members, Ida Saki and Katie Weilbring-Finazzo, met some of the oncologists who are on the frontlines of the battle to prevent, treat and ultimately cure cancer in children.

The Dancers Give Back Dallas event, a New Year’s weekend of dance classes taught by master teachers for ages 12 through professional dancers, raises funds exclusively for Micaela’s Army Foundation. Micaela White lost her battle with leukemia five years ago at the age of 18, but her family and friends continue to raise money to battle cancer.
Who wouldn’t like a little Extra Life?
  Extra Life
Extra Life unites thousands of players around the world in a 24-hour gaming marathon to support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Since its inception in 2008, Extra Life has raised more than $22 million for local CMN Hospitals, including Children’s Health.

Extra Life works just like a fundraising walk or run, but you don’t need to leave the comfort of your living room to participate. Simply register to play games for the kids at Children’s Health and ask your family and friends for support. Then challenge yourself to play all 25 hours on one day, in one weekend, or several days before the main event. While many people choose to play video games, you can play whatever you’d like–tabletop games, card games, basketball–anything! Extra Life is all about doing something fun, challenging yourself to do it for a longer period of time, and ultimately raising lifesaving funds for kids in need.

Extra Life begins whenever you want it to! Just find a date and time that works with your schedule and start playing! Our National Game Day will begin at exactly 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, and ends at 8 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 6.

Mum’s the word in October
  The Mum Shop
During the 2010-11 inaugural year of the Junior Leadership Board at Children’s Health, board member Morgan Pearlman partnered with The Mum Shop to create and sell a special charity ribbon benefiting Children’s Health.

Thanks to Amy Fogarty, owner of The Mum Shop, this became an annual fundraiser for the Junior Leadership Board.

The Mum Shop sells the ribbons for $2 each to anyone who wishes to add the ribbon to their mum and support Children’s Health. With 100 percent of ribbon sales supporting the hospital, it has been a successful fundraising activity over the past six years, raising a total of $7,228. The charity ribbon is a 12-inch white ribbon with three repeating logos. The ribbon is included on most of The Mum Shop’s order forms.

CRI is making strides in childhood cancer research
According to statistics from the National Cancer Institute, 10,380 children in the U.S. under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Although advances in treatment have increased the five-year survival rate from 58 percent to 80 percent, cancer in children remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children and teenagers. But the outlook is improving thanks to cutting-edge biomedical research that contributes to the understanding of the disease and the discovery of new treatment options.

The interdisciplinary group of scientists and physicians at the Children’s Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern has made significant strides in childhood cancer research.
