North Texas Giving Day

Look for the Red Balloon on September 22

North Texas Giving Day is right around the corner, and so is your opportunity to be part of the largest single day of giving in the U.S.

From 6 a.m. to midnight next week, donations of $25 or more made through NorthTexasGivingDay.org can be multiplied through the Communities Foundation of Texas, which offers more than $2 million in bonus funds and prizes to nonprofits with the most donors.

Plan now to “get up and give” on Sept. 22 to Children’s Health, which provides unsurpassed clinical care and conducts research on many childhood disorders, most of which needs supplemental philanthropic funding to move toward new treatments. Child Life, which includes pet-assisted therapy, art and music therapy, the Funnyatrics clown program and other programs that not only make hospital stays easier but medical outcomes better, is also dependent on philanthropy to continue treating the heart and soul of kids.

Make life better for children on Sept. 22 by choosing Children’s Medical Center Foundation via the North Texas Giving Day website. In just six years, some $119 million has been pumped into the North Texas community. Last year alone, more than 118,000 gifts totaling $33 million benefited more than 2,022 nonprofits. Please put Children’s Health at the top of that list this year, and make a gift on Sept. 22.

Handprints and Hope for cancer patients

  Hyundai Hope on Wheels

Four years ago, physician-scientist Dr. Kenneth Chen and his colleagues at Children’s Medical Center turned surgically removed kidney tumors – once threats to life – into new sources of information on cancer. They sequenced the genes of dozens of tumors, and now Dr. Chen will build on their discoveries with a new $150,000 Hyundai Hope On Wheels grant.

Dr. Chen, a pediatric oncologist at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and an assistant instructor of pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center, was named a Hyundai Young Investigator during a special handprint ceremony. Several current and former patients were invited to dip their hands in paint and put their palms on a white 2016 Hyundai Tucson to commemorate their fight against the disease.

The Young Investigator grants fund research projects designed to improve the treatment and quality of life for children with cancer. This year, Hyundai will award more than $13 million in new pediatric cancer grants. Since 1998, the program has funded $115 million in research to Children’s Oncology Group member institutions nationwide.

Read more about Dr. Chen and his research, and view a photo gallery of the handprint ceremony.

Shake it up, baby

  Shake Shack

Dallas now has its very own Shake Shack, and Children’s Health has its own signature “concrete.” Appropriately dubbed Pearl & Pecan, each purchase of the confection, made up of vanilla custard with salted caramel sauce, pecans and chocolate toffee, generates a 5 percent donation to Children’s Medical Center Foundation.

The New York-city-based burger icon officially debuted this month in Uptown at the Crescent. The hottest burger joint in the country, which got its start as a hotdog cart outside Madison Square Garden, is known for its all-natural burgers, chicken sandwiches, hotdogs and crinkle-cut fries. But it’s their signature concretes that keep patrons coming back.

Stop by the Crescent and order a Pearl & Pecan with a clear conscience, and know that your indulgence is doing good for kids at Children’s Medical Center.
